Finally the World Cup is here, after a sluggish week where it seemed Friday would never arrive. I have been asked time and again about the team I would be rooting for, which is an easy enough answer. But then, some have even asked me the very tricky question, Why? Now, there is no straight answer to this question. So, I am cracking my head up to figure out why I support the team that I support.
Firstly, I have a phobia against unusually large teeth (gulp!). So when I see Ronaldinho flash all his 46 teeth in a perfect smile, unlike all of you, I don’t wonder about the toothpaste he uses. And when Ronaldo opens his mouth, I don’t debate whether he would have been a rabbit or a rat in his previous life. All I can think of is the pain the protagonist in Oldboy would have had to go through if he had to extract their teeth with a hammer. He might have wished that he had picked a sledgehammer instead. This phobia rules out Brazil
I have always hated vans. Have you ever noticed that if criminals in Hindi movies had to choose a car, they would always go for the Maruti Van. Not the Merc, the BMW or the Audi… but the old Maruti Omni. The style in reaching the scene of crime in a Maruti Van, sliding open the doors of the moving van, and launching a torrent of bullets through the machine gun is just too much kick for the bollywood baddies. Plus, if they have to indulge in greater crimes like rape or molestation, it’s the most convenient. Keeping this association in mind, the flurry of ‘vans’ in the side (van Nistelrooy, van Bommel, van Persie, etc, plus the great Marco as manager) rules out
A team needs to be creative to win at this level. But any team which has 7 versions of Andrei’s, 5 versions of Olegs, 3 versions of Sergies, suggests nothing but a lack of creativity. Why would I support a team where Andrei passes to Andriey who drops the ball for Andrea and then Andrie scores. So, this rules out
I would really like to be able to spell the names of the players of the team I support. And in spite of my best efforts, I will never be able to spell the likes of Schweinsteiger, Hitzlsperger, Zuberbuhler. So
I hate people with 3-word names. It shows that they want to complicate everything, including their names. This throws
I am not particularly fond of teams which have good-looking players with long hair. They give me a complex (hmpf!). How can you look good AND play football well? Gross injustice! So,
But I do (somewhat) like teams which are young at heart. So,
I also believe that the dark horses should actually be dark, and if they have funny-sounding names (like Kalou, Toure, Drogba, Eboue) then it makes it more interesting. So,
But most of all, I like teams with ugly, bald players. I can relate to them, and derive a sense of belonging*. So its
*A disclaimer – This does not imply that I am bald or balding. I am blessed with very good hair (thank you), but am sure that the balding would start once I enter my forties. Ugliness, anyway, is a subjective term. If everyone found Thierry Henry, David Trezeguet & Fabian Barthez to be ugly, they wouldn’t have had such hot wives/girlfriends.
So, to sum up my stakes for the World Cup:
Team I hope would win –
Team most likely to win -
Team I hope would not win –
Team I think would disappoint most –
Outside chance of surprise –
If not
Dark Horses –
Best Wagers –
Final four prediction –
Golden Boot – Thierry Henry
Players to watch out for – Kaka, Messi, Requilme, Ronaldinho, Henry
‘Wishful-Thinking’ Comeback – Zinedine Zidane
Let the show begin…

Do agree with the teeth part, but chk out this article whch slightly roots fr Brazil for a different reason
well written...i always go for the best wagers though!
Man,
To say a wrod against Brazil for whatever reasons is sheer blasphemy.
They are going to win, no doubt about that at all.
They you can knock of their teeth.
I was initially for France but later i found out Henry is the only Arsenal player in the entire squad. Even Pires did not make it. And Viera and Wilthord are Ex-gunners so they dont count. The thing is France got an amazing fire power with Henry, Trezeguet, Cisse and Saha, but arent that strong at defence. I think I will root for Holland because I like a lot of the players, and most of them, like our Van Persie, Van Nistlerooy, Van der Sar, Van Bronckhorst, Van der vaart, Van Bommel including coach Van Basten (the Legend) have a prefix "Van" in their name, just like me: Van lalruatkima *WIDE GRIN*
And after Holland, my mind is made up on an Underdog team, namely Togo. Love them. Our very own Adebayor is on fire with 12 goals already in this tournament.
Hehehe... there's this girl I know in Bangalore. Last week I met her and she's like really "duh" about Football, and since she knows I am a hardcore Arsenal fan, she actually asked me if Arsenal qualified for the World Cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hyuk hyuk hyuk!!! =))
hmm nice post....my views on the same !!!
Team I hope would win – Brazil
Team most likely to win - Brazil
Team I hope would not win – Germany, Italy
Team I think would disappoint most – France
Outside chance of surprise – Czech Republic
If not Brazil, then – England, Argentina, Czech Republic
Dark Horses – Ivory Coast, Australia
Best Wagers – Argentina (Brazil odds are too ugly)
Final four prediction – Brazil, Argentina, England, Czech Republic
Golden Boot – Adriano
Players to watch out for – Ronaldinho, Messi, Riquelme, Van Persie, Henry
@DD - Its true that Brazil have style and flair which is quite unique, and understandably they are the favourites.. but well, they are not my favourites :)
@Kotler - I think it makes a lot of sense to gun for Argentina if you dont have any other strong loyalties... they seem to be one of the most undervalued teams in bookie terms
@Confused - Come on... I never doubted their football... but would be better for weak-hearted people like me (and those who have watched Dracula) if they knowcked off their teeth first
@Kima - My loyalties for France have not been inspired by Arsenal. I think I started rooting for France first (Euro 96 I think). And come on.. they have a very solid defence with Gallas, Thuram. Ebidal, Sagnol/ Buomsong.. and Makelele as the DM
I liked Holland, but cannot support any team which has RvN... dont like that bugger at all. Btw, the story about Arsenal being in the WC was too much!
@Kon - Interesting... well, I know Brazil are overwhelming favourites, but I think France, England, Argentina are quite underrated. Obviously, we dont agree about France :)
Hehehe next season we are going to kick ass! Walcott will be able to play by then, Henry renewed his contract, and did you see our latest acquisition Rosicky score those two goals yesterday? Wenger really knows how to spot talent. Go Gunners Go!!!!
hey Nirav, show some respect to our Asian teams as well:::: we have a strong teams in Korea and Iran..japan is like another England..highly overrated, players with inflated egos..
And dont forget the socceroos..sport is in their blood.. i tell u that this time WC will be lifted by some unknown team like Czech republic or Togo...just watch this space
sonam@s'pore
@Kima - Absolutely... Rosicky was amazing.. and Wenger got him just at the right time. From the looks of it, his price would have sky-rocketed if he had waited for after the World Cup
@Sonam - Thanks for visiting, brother.. Well, I do like the Aussie team and their spirit (being in Oz-land helps), but am not a big fan of the other Asian teams. Totally agree with you about Japan. And come on, Czech is not an unknown team :)
nice post, nicer reasoning...... neways, me supporting argentina... im illiterate when it comes to football, and im supporting argentina just coz my latest read happens to be the motorcycle diaries.
@Priya - I think yours is an excellent choice... and the reason is even better :))
But Argentina is the team to put your money on!
rooting for ?
mate - ur in oz - root is a four letter slang word :)
